There are two options for Music at Year 10 - Music Technology and Music Theory.

Music Technology

This is a practical course focusing on a mix of music technology, composition, practical music on a chosen instrument. The modules in Year 10 are streamlined to allow students to take music in Year 11 and look at the following:

Module 1: Film Music - this comprises examining why music is important in movies, how do we create the music, composing music for a movie clip and visiting the cinema to watch the chosen composer for the unit.

Module 2: Practical music - this module runs throughout the course and students have individual or group lessons with a specialist teacher once a week. Students perform as part of a group and as an individual.

Module 3: Music Technology - students learn about aspects of sound gear and technology and how to set it up, continued learning with Garageband, the basics of the iMovie app and the basics of recording in a studio.

Module 4: Composition - using technology to write music.

Module 5: Basic music notation, understanding how the brain works with music - this runs throughout the course and is an introductory level.

Music Theory

This is a practical course focusing on a mix of music theory and notation, composition, practical music on a chosen instrument. The modules in Year 10 are streamlined to allow students to take music in Year 11 and look at the following:

Module 1: Film Music - this comprises examining why music is important in movies, how do we create the music, composing music for a movie clip and visiting the cinema to watch the chosen composer for the unit.

Module 2: Practical music - this module runs throughout the course and students have individual or group lessons with a specialist teacher once a week. Students perform as part of a group and as an individual.

Module 4: Composition - using technology to write music. The focus is composing using Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals and there is a class trip to the Napier Aquarium to extend thinking and ideas along the theme.

Module 4: Music notation introducing key Level 1 ideas, understanding how the brain works with music - this runs throughout the course.
